Floyd Borden has been with the Department of Biochemistry for many years and is currently their Chief Administrative Officer. He provides administrative management and coordination of diverse business-related functions including finance, budget, personnel, space and facilities planning, grant administration, maintenance, and policy interpretation. Floyd also manages the department’s day-to-day operations, per University policies and procedures, and provides direction and oversight to the office staff.
Patricia Bunn manages Buy@Duke, Concur travel expense reports, SAP reports, and deposits. In her 22 years of service, she has worked in many areas at Duke.
Chelsey is a Staff Assistant in the Biochemistry Department. She provides administrative support to the Chairman and interacts with all faculty. As needed, she works on appointments, promotion, and tenure (APT) packages/dossiers for faculty as well as faculty recruitment. Chelsey coordinates and oversees the Biochemistry Research Forums and Seminar Series, including the named lectureships and graduate student-hosted seminars.
Previous to Duke, Chelsey worked as an Associate Agent in the insurance industry for five years.
Barbara Smith
Barbara Smith supervises the Biochemistry Department’s grants and contracts positions and support personnel. She coordinates and performs pre- and post-award activities for the department inclusive of a complex and diverse portfolio of grants and contracts. Barbara is the point person on university grants and contracts issues, as well as guideline questions. Barbara also advises all biochemistry PIs on administrative requirements in preparing proposal submissions.
Peggy coordinates the graduate student admissions and recruitment process, finance & payroll for students, assists students and faculty with course management, and serves as a liaison between the graduate school and students. Prior to her role as DGSA, Peggy was a Staff Assistant for 10 years, supporting the department Chairman, faculty recruitment, and research forums and seminars.
Margot received her doctorate from the Biochemistry Department and never left, transitioning to research administration after spending a number of years as a postdoc and senior researcher. Currently, she manages all the department's shared equipment and space, oversees renovations, coordinates departmental social events, and is responsible for general trouble-shooting for a variety of lab-related and administrative issues. Additionally, she is the pre- and post-award manager for the Beese, Brennan, Meyer, Richardson, Schumacher, and Yokoyama labs.
