Dr. Eric Toone, Breakthrough Energy
"On the feasibility of air capture of greenhouse gases." Presented by Dr. Eric Toone By now holding the average global temperature increase attributable to anthropogenic greenhouse gases to under 1.5C seems unlikely; even a 2.0C increase is most likely unavoidable in the absence of extraordinary measures implemented at a global scale. Two of the most important greenhouse gases are carbon dioxide and methane, and proposals have been advanced to capture and store or destroy both at scales relevant to the mitigation of human-induced warming. Here we consider the thermodynamic and mechanistic challenges to the capture and disposal of these species, and their implications for practical solutions.
